Choosing a body lotion: how to find a formula that suits your skin and daily routine

Dry skin does not automatically call for the thickest cream on the shelf. The right body lotion depends on your skin type, where you use the product and how quickly you want to get dressed after applying it. A facial lotion also has different properties from a body milk for your arms, legs and torso.

Marketing claims can make comparisons difficult. A long-lasting hydration claim, “natural” ingredients or a lightweight texture do not tell you everything about how a product fits into your routine. Below, you’ll discover which pitfalls to avoid and which specifications to check before you buy.

Three common body lotion pitfalls

1. Mistaking a hydration-duration claim for a guarantee

Brands sometimes claim 24, 48, 72 or even 100 hours of hydration. These are not universal standards. Based on the brand’s own research or product information, such a claim may be based on an instrumental or clinical test involving a limited group of participants. The result does not indicate exactly how long your skin will feel comfortable, particularly after showering, exercising or washing your hands frequently.

Use the time-based claim as additional information only. First, look at the ingredients, the skin type the lotion is intended for and how often the product should be applied according to the label.

2. Failing to check fragrance in products labelled “for sensitive skin”

A lotion may be described as suitable for sensitive skin while still containing perfume or fragrance allergens. Therefore, check the ingredients list for parfum, limonene, linalool, geraniol and citronellol, among others. If you are looking for a fragrance-free body lotion, it is best to check the label on the exact packaging. Formulas can change.

A fragranced product is not automatically unsuitable, but fragrance-free care is often the more practical choice when you want to avoid fragrance ingredients.

3. Confusing face and body products

A body lotion is designed for larger areas of skin and is not always intended for the face. Conversely, a facial moisturiser may contain relatively little product for daily use over the whole body. Therefore, check the application area: face, body or both.

A facial lotion should also combine comfortably with sun protection or make-up. For the body, a pump bottle, large volume and fast-absorbing texture are often more important.

Which specifications should you compare?

Skin type and area of use

For normal to dry skin, a lightweight moisturising lotion may be sufficient. For very dry skin, ingredients such as glycerine, oils, petrolatum, dimethicone or shea butter can help limit moisture loss. This does not mean that one ingredient will work in the same way for everyone; texture and personal tolerance remain important.

If you are looking for a body lotion for dry skin or body lotion for very dry skin, check whether the product is explicitly intended for that skin type. For the face, a hydrating face cream or facial moisturiser is generally a more logical choice than just any body milk.

Ingredients with a clear function

  • Glycerine helps attract water and is a widely used moisturising ingredient.
  • Hyaluronic acid, often listed as sodium hyaluronate, is used in hydrating formulas. A body lotion with hyaluronic acid may be ideal if you are looking for a lightweight, moisture-binding formula.
  • Ceramides are found in some lotions designed to support the skin barrier. Check that ceramides are actually listed among the ingredients.
  • Petrolatum, mineral oil and dimethicone can form a protective layer, helping to limit moisture loss.
  • Perfume and fragrance allergens are relevant when you are looking for a lotion for sensitive skin.

A higher percentage of a supposedly popular ingredient does not automatically make a product a better buy. Look at the complete formula, the volume and the intended use.

Texture, absorption speed and packaging

A fast-absorbing body lotion is useful after showering or in the morning when you want to get dressed straight away. A richer lotion may be more suitable for very dry skin, but it may remain noticeable on the skin for longer.

Also consider:

  • the volume, for example 200, 250 or 400 ml;
  • a pump bottle for daily use;
  • the shelf life and period after opening;
  • warnings on the label;
  • whether the lotion is for external use only.

A small facial lotion bottle may work out more expensive per millilitre than a body milk. Therefore, do not compare only the price of the packaging; also consider the volume and expected usage.

Frequently asked questions about body lotion

Can I use body lotion on my face too?

Only if the packaging states that the product is intended for use on the face. A body lotion may contain perfume or have a texture that you do not find comfortable on your face. If in doubt, choose a facial moisturiser or hydrating face cream with a clearly stated area of use.

How long does body lotion last after opening?

This varies by product. Look for the open-jar symbol with, for example, “12M” on the packaging. This generally means that the product should be used within twelve months of opening. Store the lotion in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The packaging provides the definitive information about the exact shelf life.

When should I apply body lotion?

After showering, on clean skin, is a practical time. Pat your skin dry and apply the lotion while it still feels comfortably hydrated. Massage the product in until it has been absorbed. If you have sensitive skin, stop using it if irritation occurs and follow the safety information on the label.
