Choosing body care products: a practical guide to skin, fragrance and gifts

Body care products may seem easy to compare, but attractive packaging or a promise such as “intensive care” does not always tell you what you are getting. The key differences often lie in the contents, ingredients, intended use and size. This matters whether you are looking for a body lotion for everyday use, want to give a perfume gift set as a present or need compact travel-size body care.

Many Dutch shoppers come up against the same pitfalls:

  • A larger pack is not always better value. A multipack may look appealing, but it only suits your needs if you like the fragrance and use the product before the expiry information on the packaging.
  • “3-in-1” means convenience, not automatically the ideal formula for everyone. A product for the body, face and hair saves space, but if you are looking for targeted care, separate products may be more suitable.
  • Marketing claims about hydration or long-lasting effects are no guarantee of your own experience. Look at the ingredients list, product type and directions for use. Based on a brand’s own research or communications, such claims should not be viewed as a universal outcome.
  • Fragrance and allergens are sometimes underestimated. Perfume, limonene, linalool and other fragrance ingredients may appear in the ingredients list. Always check the current packaging, particularly if you have sensitive skin or a known allergy.

Which specifications are important?

1. Choose the right type of body care

The product type determines how you use it:

  • Shower gel: designed to be rinsed off and practical for everyday showering.
  • Body lotion: usually lighter in texture and suitable for covering larger areas of the body.
  • Body butter: often richer and more nourishing, for example for dry areas such as elbows, knees and heels.
  • Body oil: can feel pleasant after showering; check whether the formula absorbs quickly and be mindful of a slippery bathroom floor.
  • Body scrub: contains exfoliating ingredients. Use it according to the label and not on irritated or damaged skin.
  • Care set: combines several products, often in attractive packaging. Check that all the items are suitable for the recipient.

For body care products for dry skin, it is not only the word “hydrating” that matters. Also look for ingredients such as glycerine, shea butter, plant oils, petroleum-based ingredients or hyaluronic acid. The effects and suitability vary from one formula to another, so read the INCI list and precautions.

2. Check the contents, size and intended use

Travel-size body care products of 50 to 100 ml are handy for a washbag, weekend bag or gym bag. A smaller size does mean you will need to refill it more often. For use at home, a 200 to 400 ml pack may be more practical. With multipacks, such as six bottles of shower gel, the total contents are more important than the price per item alone.

Also check:

  • the quantity in ml or grams;
  • whether the product is suitable for the body, face, hair or multiple areas;
  • the expiry or PAO information on the packaging;
  • storage advice, such as keeping it in a cool, dry place;
  • whether the product is for external use only;
  • warnings relating to eyes, children and known allergies.

3. Pay attention to EU information and ingredients

Cosmetics sold in the European Union are subject, among other things, to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products. The packaging should include relevant information such as an ingredients list, contents, the responsible person and usage warnings. This does not mean that every product is suitable for every user.

Use the ingredients list as a point of comparison. In fragrance products, fragrance ingredients may form part of the formula. With products containing acids, such as salicylic acid or glycolic acid in some facial kits, pay extra attention to the instructions and sun exposure. Stop using the product if irritation occurs and follow the directions on the packaging.

Frequently asked questions about body care products

What do you need at minimum for a simple body care routine?

A shower gel for washing and a body lotion to use after showering are a practical starting point for many adults. If you prefer a richer texture, you can choose a body butter. A body scrub is an optional addition and does not need to be used every day; always follow the product instructions.

Are 3-in-1 shower gel and shampoo suitable for everyone?

A 3-in-1 shower gel is particularly convenient for travelling, exercising or keeping your bathroom routine minimal. According to the product description, the 250 ml Axe Recharge 3-in-1 Shower Gel is intended for the body, face and hair. Check the ingredients and stop using it if irritation occurs. If you already use separate products or have specific hair or skin needs, it may be better to compare individual formulas.

How long do body care products remain usable?

Check the expiry date, batch information and PAO symbol on the packaging. Close bottles and jars properly, store them in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight. A noticeable change in fragrance, colour or texture is a reason to stop using the product. With an opened body lotion or body oil, hygienic application is particularly important.
