Choosing a black lamp: how to compare design, lighting and use without making the wrong purchase

A black lamp suits many Dutch interiors, from industrial flats to modern homes with calm, light colours. However, a black finish says little about practical quality. A lamp may look attractive but prove inconvenient because of a cable that is too short, a non-replaceable light source or an unsuitable IP rating.

That is why it pays to look beyond appearance when comparing products. Consider where the lamp will be placed, how much light you need, the type of fitting and how the lamp is operated. Below, we outline the key points to consider, along with some popular options for different uses.

Three pitfalls when buying a black lamp

1. An integrated LED lamp seems convenient, but it is not always replaceable

With a black LED lamp, the light source is sometimes integrated. This means you cannot replace a separate bulb when the LED module reaches the end of its service life. With models featuring an E27 or GU10 fitting, on the other hand, you can choose a suitable light source yourself and replace it later.

So check the following:

  • Is the light source included?
  • Is the LED module replaceable?
  • Which fitting is used?
  • What is the maximum wattage?

An integrated LED lamp can enable a compact design, but a separate fitting often offers greater flexibility.

2. “Dimmable” does not always mean that the lamp has its own dimmer

A dimmable lamp can be operated in several ways. Some models have a built-in touch dimmer, remote control or mode button. Other lamps are only dimmable when used with a suitable dimmable light source and an external dimmer.

For a black floor lamp or black table lamp, it is therefore important to check exactly how it is operated. If it only says “externally dimmable”, the dimmer is not necessarily included.

3. A black outdoor lamp is not automatically suitable for all weather conditions

For outdoor use, the IP rating is important. IP44 means protection against splashing water, but not against immersion or powerful jets of water. Such a lamp is generally more suitable for a sheltered balcony, covered area or patio than for a completely exposed location.

A lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. So do not use a black wall lamp or table lamp with this rating outdoors, even temporarily on a rainy evening.

Specifications to check before buying

Size and placement

Measure the available space before ordering a lamp. A tall arc lamp may look spacious, but it also needs a wide base or long arm. A compact lamp is more practical on a bedside table, windowsill or small side table.

Pay attention to:

  • Height and diameter for a table lamp;
  • Base size and projection for a black floor lamp;
  • Cable length and the distance to the socket;
  • Clear space above a table for a black pendant lamp;
  • The position of the beam from a black ceiling spotlight.

For example, a 45 cm tripod lamp is more suited to decorative use on a low cabinet or table than as the main light source in a living room.

Light source, colour temperature and brightness

Light colour is measured in Kelvin. Around 3000 K produces warm white light, which is often suitable for ambient lighting in a living room, bedroom or on a patio. An adjustable range from 3000 to 6500 K offers greater variety, such as warmer light in the evening and more neutral light while working.

Lumens indicate how much light a lamp produces. A small table lamp with 170 or 210 lumens is mainly suitable for accent or ambient lighting. General lighting usually requires a higher light output. Also consider the number of light points and the direction of the beam.

Safety and indoor or outdoor use

Check whether the lamp is suitable for:

  • Indoor use: often IP20;
  • Sheltered outdoor use: for example IP44;
  • A fixed connection or a standard plug;
  • Self-assembly or installation by an electrician.

According to the product information, a hardwired black outdoor wall lamp must be connected by a qualified electrician. Switch off the power during installation or maintenance, and never exceed the fitting’s maximum wattage.

Other styles to compare

As well as a black floor lamp or table lamp, there are several other styles:

  • A black wall lamp is suitable for targeted lighting beside a mirror, bed or outside door. Always check the IP rating for outdoor models.
  • A black ceiling spotlight works well for accent lighting. According to the product description, the Philips Pongee has an adjustable spotlight, a 40-degree beam angle and a Click!Fix system.
  • A black pendant lamp has a strong influence on the look of the area above a dining table. The Aigostar Retro has an E27 fitting, a diameter of 25 cm and is supplied without a light source.
  • An industrial lamp made with metal, wirework or a tripod base suits robust interiors. The Atmosphera Tripod Lamp is 45 cm high, has an E27 fitting and a maximum power of 25 W.

Always check whether the light source is included before buying. With a separate fitting, you can choose between warm light, a smart lamp or a dimmable LED lamp, provided it falls within the product specifications.

Frequently asked questions about black lamps

Which black lamp is suitable for a small living room?

A compact black table lamp is useful as accent lighting on a cabinet or side table. If you want to light a larger part of the room, choose a black floor lamp with sufficient lumens and a stable base. Measure the available floor space beforehand and check the cable length.

How much does an LED lamp cost to run?

Consumption depends on the wattage and the number of hours it is switched on. A 2 W lamp uses 2 kWh per 1,000 hours, while a 14 W model uses 14 kWh over the same period. Multiply this by your electricity tariff to get a practical estimate. The energy efficiency class and wattage are usually shown on the product page or packaging.

Can I use a black lamp outdoors?

Only if the product information says that you can. IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. IP44 provides protection against splashing water and is suitable for sheltered outdoor locations, but the lamp must not be immersed or exposed to powerful jets of water. Also check that the cable, connection and mounting are suitable for outdoor use.
