Buying a backpack: how to choose a practical model without falling into marketing traps

Buying a backpack seems simple until you have to choose between a women’s backpack, men’s backpack, unisex backpack, laptop backpack or sporty backpack. Product photos also do not always show how large a bag really is, how many compartments you will actually use or how well the material withstands rain.

Three common pitfalls are:

  • A capacity figure without clear dimensions: a spacious backpack may hold plenty of litres on paper, yet still be awkwardly narrow or excessively deep.
  • Vague terms such as waterproof: water-repellent material helps against light rain, but it does not automatically mean that the seams and zips are fully waterproof.
  • Lots of compartments without a good layout: extra zips may sound useful, but small or hard-to-reach compartments can actually become frustrating in everyday use.

The right choice therefore depends on the size, material, carrying comfort and the items you usually take with you.

Which specifications should you check?

1. Size and capacity

Start with the capacity in litres, then check the dimensions in centimetres. For an everyday backpack, around 15 to 25 litres is often practical for a bottle, lunch, cardigan, tablet and small accessories. If you carry sportswear, books or travel essentials, you may need more space.

A mini backpack of around 4 litres is suitable for just the essentials, such as your phone, wallet and keys. Also pay attention to the backpack’s length and width. A bag that is too large for your build may feel uncomfortable, while a compact model can quickly become too small for commuting.

2. Carrying comfort and adjustability

Check whether the shoulder straps are adjustable and wide enough. A padded back panel can make the backpack more comfortable when you use it for longer periods. For school, work or cycling, two shoulder straps are generally more stable than a single carrying option.

A lightweight backpack reduces the weight of the bag itself, but focus especially on the total weight once it is packed. A model with a sturdy handle can also be useful on public transport or when putting the bag down.

3. Material and protection

Many backpacks are made from polyester, synthetic canvas, faux leather or real leather. Polyester is usually easy to maintain and suitable for sporty or everyday models. A leather backpack has a different look, but requires more care when exposed to moisture, heat and general wear.

With a water-repellent backpack, check exactly what the product information states. According to the product description, the Beneunder Mini Backpack LC01b is made from water-repellent synthetic fabric with Level 4 water-repellent protection. This is a manufacturer’s product specification; it does not guarantee that the bag will keep out prolonged, heavy rain completely. In wet weather, protect electronic devices with extra care.

For a laptop backpack, a separate laptop or tech compartment, a secure fastening and sufficient protection all around are more important than simply having lots of compartments. Always check the maximum dimensions of your laptop or tablet.

Choose according to how you will use it

A school backpack needs to carry books, a lunch box and often a drinks bottle. For work, a laptop compartment or tech compartment is useful. A sporty backpack benefits from a spacious main compartment, a side pocket for a bottle and a back panel that stays comfortable while travelling to the gym.

A women’s or men’s backpack is not automatically technically different from a unisex backpack. Focus mainly on the dimensions, colour, straps and layout. If you are looking for a smart appearance, a leather backpack or a model with leather details may be a better fit. For cycling, shopping and light outdoor activities, low weight and easy maintenance are often more important.

Frequently asked questions about buying a backpack

How big should an everyday backpack be?

That depends on what you carry. A mini backpack is enough for just your phone, wallet and keys. For work or school, 15 to 25 litres is often more practical. If you carry sportswear, books or a laptop, also check the dimensions of the main compartment and any laptop compartment.

Is a water-repellent backpack suitable for cycling in the rain?

A water-repellent backpack can provide protection against light rain, but check the product information carefully. Water can enter through zips, seams or open pockets. For a laptop, tablet and documents, you may wish to use a separate protective sleeve.

How can you keep a backpack looking good for longer?

Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Synthetic fabrics can often be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Leather requires a dry, soft cloth and protection from prolonged moisture and heat. Do not overfill the bag: this places unnecessary strain on the zips, seams and shoulder straps.
