Buying an automatic jump starter: how to choose safe roadside starting assistance

A flat car battery rarely happens at a convenient time. You might be in a car park, on your way to work or preparing to set off in your motorhome. An automatic jump starter can get you moving again without needing another car. However, not every model with a high amp rating is automatically suitable for your vehicle.

Product information from brands and sellers can also vary. That is why it is sensible to focus on verifiable specifications, connection instructions and how the device should be stored.

Common pitfalls when choosing a portable jump starter

1. Looking only at the peak current

Figures such as 2,000A, 4,000A or even 8,000A quickly catch the eye. However, peak current is a short-term maximum value. The stated starting current and suitability for a particular engine type provide more useful context.

Always check:

  • Is the device suitable for a 12V lead-acid battery?
  • What maximum engine capacity is stated for petrol and diesel?
  • Is a starting current specified, or only a peak current?
  • Is a boost function required when the battery voltage is very low?

A 12V jump starter for a small petrol engine does not necessarily need the same specifications as a jump starter for a van, motorhome or diesel SUV.

2. Misinterpreting capacity in mAh

A jump starter with a power bank is often marketed with a high battery capacity. Bear in mind that the stated capacity is not always the same as the usable capacity at the output. For example, the Porbi S306 lists 12,800mAh, but also gives a nominal output capacity of 7,200mAh.

For starting a car, the battery chemistry, electronics and starting current are more important than the mAh figure alone. For charging a phone or sat-nav, the USB output is what matters.

3. Treating safety features as a guarantee

Features such as reverse-polarity, short-circuit and overheating protection are useful. However, they do not replace correct connection. A car battery booster must be used in accordance with the instructions:

  1. Switch off the vehicle.
  2. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal (+).
  3. Connect the black clamp to a suitable unpainted metal earthing point, unless the instructions specify otherwise.
  4. Check the status indicator.
  5. Start the engine for no more than a few seconds per attempt.
  6. Once the engine has started, remove the black clamp first, followed by the red clamp.

Do not use a jump starter with a damaged, leaking or swollen battery. A jump starter is also not a substitute for repairs when the battery or alternator is faulty.

Important specifications for a car battery jump starter

Suitability for your vehicle

Choose a model that matches the engine type and capacity. Product descriptions often give separate figures, such as “up to 6.0-litre petrol” and “up to 4.0-litre diesel”. According to the product information provided by the relevant brands, these figures are intended as compatibility guidance; always check your car’s manual.

For motorbikes, boats and motorhomes, engine capacity is not the only relevant factor. Check whether the vehicle uses a 12V battery and whether the supplied cables and clamps are suitable.

Starting current, peak current and boost mode

A higher current reserve can be useful with larger engines or in low temperatures, but compare models on a like-for-like basis. For example, the GOOLOO GP2000 lists a peak current of 2,000A and supports petrol engines up to 8.0 litres and diesel engines up to 6.0 litres. According to the product description, a minimum charge level of 50% is recommended before use.

A boost mode may be needed when the battery is completely flat. On some models, this function bypasses low-voltage detection. Only use it as described in the instructions.

Battery capacity, charging ports and storage

A battery jump starter is more convenient when you can clearly see the charge level. An LCD display helps prevent you setting off with an almost empty emergency jump starter. Also consider:

  • USB-A or USB-C outputs;
  • charging power, such as 18W or 65W;
  • supplied car charger or mains charger;
  • storage case and cable length;
  • weight and dimensions;
  • recommended charging interval.

A car interior can become much hotter in summer than the normal operating environment. Do not therefore store the device in direct sunlight for extended periods. Follow the stated temperature limits and recharge the model regularly. Some manufacturers recommend doing this every two to three months, while other models state a longer standby period. These are figures provided by the brands and are not a guarantee of actual service life.

Frequently asked questions about car jump starters

Can I use a jump starter for petrol and diesel engines?

You can, provided the model explicitly supports both engine types and your vehicle falls within the stated engine capacity. Also check that the battery is 12V. Do not use a jump starter for an electric vehicle unless the manufacturer expressly permits it.

How long does a car jump starter last?

Service life depends on charging cycles, temperature, storage and usage. Charge the device according to the instructions, even when it is used infrequently. Store it in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and not in an extremely hot car. Check the charge level before a long journey.

What does it cost to use a jump starter?

Once purchased, the direct running costs are limited to the electricity needed to recharge it. A model with a USB output can also serve as a power bank. Bear in mind, however, that a jump starter is an emergency solution: if your battery keeps going flat, servicing or replacing the car battery will still be necessary.
