Choosing ambient lighting: how to find a lamp that suits your interior and needs

The right ambient lighting can make a living room, bedroom, balcony or patio feel more inviting. But a good-looking photo isn’t enough to help you judge whether a lamp is right for you. It may not give off enough light, for example, or be unsuitable for damp spaces. A short cable can also make it awkward to place.

So look beyond the design and check the technical details. Read on to find out which features matter and which popular options suit different needs.

Common pitfalls when choosing ambient lighting

1. A decorative design doesn’t tell you how bright the lamp is

A modern, retro or Bauhaus-style lamp might suit your interior, but that doesn’t tell you how much light it gives off. If you’re choosing an LED lamp, check the lumen rating. A low lumen output is usually suitable for accent lighting, while you’ll need more light for reading or general illumination.

Check the colour temperature, too. 3000 kelvin gives off a warm white light that often works well in a living room, bedroom or patio. Cooler light can be more practical for a desk or workspace, but feels less decorative.

2. An outdoor lamp isn’t automatically rainproof

If you’re choosing a lamp for a patio, balcony or garden, check its IP rating. IP44 means the product is protected against splashes, but not immersion or powerful jets of water. Don’t place this kind of outdoor lamp somewhere rainwater can collect.

If there’s no IP rating, as with some decorative floor lamps, use the product indoors only. A lamp with no stated protection isn’t suitable as a solar lamp or outdoor lamp, even if it looks sturdy.

3. Wireless doesn’t always mean completely independent

A wireless or rechargeable lamp can be handy on a table, cabinet or patio where there’s no socket nearby. Check how the battery is charged and whether the lamp has a USB port. With a solar lamp, the amount of daylight also matters. In a shady garden or north-facing balcony, USB charging may be more practical.

Key specifications to check

Light source and controls

Check whether the light source is integrated or replaceable. With a lamp that has an E27 fitting, you can choose a suitable bulb yourself. Check the maximum wattage, too. For the Atmosphera Tripod Lamp, for example, it’s 25 W.

An integrated LED is compact and often easy to use, but you may not be able to replace the light source yourself. Also check whether the lamp is dimmable. A dimmable lamp with several settings is useful when you want more light during the day and a softer glow in the evening.

Size and placement

Measure the available space before you order. A 45 cm table lamp may look just right on a low cabinet, but be too large for a narrow bedside table. Check the base, the height of the lampshade and the cable length, too.

Stability matters with a floor lamp. Place a tall lamp on a level surface and out of the way of foot traffic. A 1.53-metre cable, as on the Atmosphera Tripod Lamp, will also affect where you need a socket.

Materials and care

Metal creates a different look from plastic or fabric. A metal body often suits an industrial or modern lamp, while a fabric shade can soften the light. Check the care instructions. Some rechargeable lamps, for example, should be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

If you’re using a lamp outdoors, think about where you’ll store it, too. Even with IP44 protection, it’s best to put it somewhere sheltered during prolonged rain or frost, or when you’re not using it.

Frequently asked questions about ambient lighting

What ambient lighting is suitable for a bedroom?

Choose a lamp with warm white light, ideally around 2700 to 3000 kelvin, and preferably with a dimmer. A table lamp or small wireless lamp is practical on a bedside table. Check that the light doesn’t shine directly into your eyes.

How much does an LED lamp cost to run?

Energy use depends on the wattage and how many hours the lamp is on. LED lamps generally use less electricity than traditional light sources with a similar light output, but always check the stated wattage and energy label information. An integrated 2 W LED lamp, such as the Viani, uses less electricity than a 25 W lamp over the same period of use.

Can I use any lamp outdoors?

No. Only use a lamp outdoors if the product information gives it a suitable IP rating. IP44 is suitable for splashes, but not immersion. A lamp without an IP rating should be kept indoors, even if its body is made of metal.
