Buying an air fryer: how to choose the right model without falling into marketing traps

An air fryer can be useful for chips, snacks, vegetables and complete meals. However, not every air fryer is suitable for every kitchen. A large basket takes up more space, automatic programmes do not always replace manual settings, and a high wattage says little about practical capacity.

If you are looking to buy an air fryer, it is therefore worth looking beyond capacity and the number of functions. Below, you will find the key points to consider, common pitfalls and several models suited to different needs.

Common air fryer pitfalls

1. A large capacity does not automatically mean large portions

An air fryer with a capacity of 6, 7 or 8 litres sounds spacious, but the shape of the basket determines how much food can actually fit side by side. A tall, narrow basket may be less convenient for chips or snacks than a wider drawer. As well as checking the number of litres, look at the stated food capacity, such as the weight in kilograms or the number of portions.

For a household of one or two people, a compact air fryer with a capacity of 3 to 4.2 litres may be more practical. Families or people who often cook for guests may prefer an XXL air fryer, a 6-litre air fryer or a 7-litre air fryer.

2. Lots of automatic programmes do not guarantee good results

An air fryer with automatic programmes can make operation easier. However, the preset time and temperature are still only a guideline. The amount of food, the thickness of the chips and how full the basket is all affect the result.

It is therefore worth looking for a digital timer, clear temperature controls, automatic shut-off and, where relevant, a pause function. These are features you can assess in advance and which may offer more value in everyday use than a long list of cooking programmes.

3. “Oil-free” does not mean every dish will turn out the same

Hot-air circulation makes oil-free frying or cooking with very little oil possible, depending on the recipe and the product. Frozen chips, fresh potatoes and breaded snacks do not all react in the same way. An overfilled basket can also result in less even cooking.

Use the product manual as your starting point and shake the basket when instructed. If you regularly want to prepare healthy snacks, it is also worth considering the amount of salt, sauce and the type of ingredients used. An air fryer does not automatically change the nutritional value of a dish.

Which specifications are important?

Capacity and size

Use the following as a practical guide:

  • 2 to 4 litres: suitable for smaller households, side dishes and limited kitchen space.
  • 4 to 6.5 litres: suitable for several portions or a family that does not always cook everything at once.
  • 7 to 8 litres: useful for families, larger portions and entertaining, but check the dimensions beforehand.
  • Two baskets: practical if you want to prepare different dishes at the same time, but this type often takes up more space.

Measure your worktop and leave clear space around the appliance for air intake and exhaust. Always follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Power and temperature

Many models have a power rating of approximately 1,300 to 2,000 watts. Higher power can help the appliance heat up more quickly, but it does not, on its own, indicate how quickly or evenly a dish will be ready. Air circulation, basket design and the amount of food also play a part.

A temperature setting of approximately 80 to 200 °C is suitable for many everyday preparations. Some models go higher. According to its product specifications, for example, the Ninja AF180EU has a range of 40 to 240 °C. Only use high temperatures when supported by the recipe and the manual.

Cleaning and materials

A removable basket, non-stick coating and dishwasher-safe parts can make cleaning easier. Check which components are actually suitable for the dishwasher; according to the product information, the basket of the Tefal Easy Fry Compact is dishwasher-safe, while the electrical components are not.

Do not use metal utensils if the coating is not designed for them. Damage to the basket can make the appliance less convenient to use and is a reason to replace the parts in line with the care instructions.

Safe use and lower running costs

Place your air fryer on a stable, heat-resistant surface and do not block the air vents. The basket and exterior can become hot; use the handle and wait until the appliance has cooled down before cleaning it. Never immerse the housing, plug or cable in water.

For small portions, an air fryer may not need to heat up for as long as an oven. However, running costs vary depending on the model, cooking time, wattage and electricity tariff. Claims such as “70 per cent less energy” are specific to the product. According to Tefal's own research, the Easy Fry Compact was compared with a traditional oven when cooking 300 grams of frozen chips. Do not treat this as a fixed saving for every recipe or household.

Frequently asked questions about air fryers

What size air fryer do I need for a family?

For three to four people, a capacity of around 5 to 7 litres is often a useful starting point. Also check the food capacity and basket shape. With large portions, you may need a second cooking cycle, even with a spacious air fryer.

How long does an air fryer last?

Its lifespan depends on how often it is used, how well it is cleaned and the condition of the basket and non-stick coating. Follow the care instructions, avoid metal utensils and regularly check the cable, plug and basket. Many of the models mentioned come with a statutory minimum two-year guarantee, but guarantee terms may vary by product.

Is an air fryer cheaper to run than an oven?

Not necessarily. An air fryer usually has a smaller cooking compartment, while an oven can handle larger quantities at once. Compare the power rating, preheating time, cooking time and portion size. An air fryer may be practical for one or a few portions; the comparison may be different for a full family meal.
